just before i left for my independent study, where i was going to do a photo essay, my digital camera was stolen. slashed from my bag on the trollebus. i had to write 30 pages in spanish like everyone else, but my advisor did let me borrow her canon powershot for 4 days.

my host dad, Rodrigo, had the only truck in town, so he took everyone's products from the small farming town of Santa Rosa (where i was for 3 weeks) to sell in Quito, five hours away, every thursday. He also takes about half the town to Saguangal every weekend to watch the soccer games. It's really fun riding in the back.

this is Saguangal, it's way bigger than Santa Rosa, and it's about an hour away by truck

"abuelo" (abrahan)-- he lives with my fam but is a "diario," meaning he works on different farms in Santa Rosa for pay but doesn't have his own.

picking papayas is fun-- one person has to poke the almost ripe ones with a long stick and then the other person has to catch them on the way down-- they are really heavy though and some are football size, so you have to be careful not to hurt your fingers

they have several different kinds of platano, the small "perfect" ones we import are referred to as "ceda"
